The Town Hall is located near Miaouli Square, in the beautiful vibrant center of Ermoupoli, a meeting point for locals and visitors, and it is surrounded by equally impressive Neoclassical style buildings. The three-storied Town Hall is to this day, one of the most imponent Town Halls in all of Greece. Designed by Ernst Ziller, it was founded in 1876 and inaugurated in 1889. It is built along Venizelou Street. On the side that looks over the square, it has three visible storeys, whereas the back side of the building has only two, due to the inclination of the ground. On the outside, it has a frieze and a marble propylaeum with Doric order columns on the first floor and Ionic columns on the second.
The building has a large front surface, with the focus being on the central part. On each side there are two lateral extensions which have five vertical rows of windows, separated by pilasters. The building is bordered by a verge and it carries a turret on each of its corners. When entering the Town Hall, you will remark an impressive marble stairway that leads to the upper floors, where the actual premises of the municipality are located. Note the extraordinary wall paintings and the glass roof over the staircase.
In 1998, a series or restoration work has begun for this building. The glass roof and the top of the staircase have been rebuilt and, following Ziller's unaccomplished designs, painter Anna Vasilaki had been trusted with the wall painting of the interior.
The Municipal Services, a court of law, the land registry, the archaeological museum and other public services are found under the roof of the Town Hall.
On the basement, you can visit a traditional coffeehouse with a particular wooden furniture and decoration.
The Town Hall is open daily, 09:00 - 15:00.
