The epithet "plousios", meaning the rich, was given to this church in comparison to Agios Nikolaos ton Ptohon (St Nicolas of the poor), in Ano Syros, the oldest orthodox church in Syros, which is much more simple and modest. Marble is omnipresent in this church, something which reveals the wealth that was brought to the island, thanks its commercial activity. Architect G. Metaxas makes great use of the Corinthian order in this church. In the period between 1883-1899, master craftsman Gheorghios Vitalis of Tinos island, a skilled sculptor, was trusted with the creation of the marble iconostasis, which stands out for the elegance of its design. It is made of Pentelic marble and inset elements of Italian marble, which are placed on the casing and the lower part of the iconostasis. It carries relief carvings of decorative motifs with golden details.
On each side of the Beautiful Gate (the central gate before the chancel, one can admire the statues of two sitting angels. The icons on the right and left of the iconostasis were created in early 20th century by monks of Mount Athos.
