On the Pidali bay, on the southern extremity of the port, in a stone building, once was the island's lazaretto. It had been build between 1839 and 1841 by Von Weiler, under the supervision of Lambros Zavos. Travellers coming by from Turkey or Egypt stayed for about a week in the lazaretto, to avoid the possibility of a contagious disease transmission.
It has ceased to function by late 19th century and shortly after it was turned into a prison. In 1908, it became a mental asylum. During and after the Greek Civil War, it had served as a transit point to Gyaros, a desert island, and land of exile for political prisoners. Today, there are plans of transforming the building into a casino.
