In 1978, the painter’s son, Elias Gounaropoulos, donates his father’s atelier and 40 of the latter’s oil paintings and drawings to the Municipality of Zografos. Thus the Gounaropoulos Museum is born. In 1990, the Municipality of Zografos expands the museum adding a new building next to the old atelier of the painter (which has been listed by the Greek State as conservation-worthy property); the new building serves as Art and Culture Centre and supplements the function of the main museum building. Thus, the old building –the painter's atelier– offers guided tours for school students and other visitors who wish to acquaint themselves with G. Gounaro’s painting, while the new building – the Art and Civilization Center – hosts a variety of art exhibitions, lectures and other cultural events.
