Zoothochou Pigi Monastery, founded in 1720 a.d., is located 4 km east of the main town of Poros. The Monastery is built on a green slope surrounded by pine trees. The place combines simplicity and peace. The monastery was precious during the Greek Liberation War in 1821. It offered spiritual, financial and social assistance to the freedom fighters. Katholiko, is a bacilica with a dome and a tower like belfry being the main church of the monastery. The first orphanage, as well as the first Ecclesiastical School in independent Greece was founded within the confines of this very Monastery by Ioannis Kapodistrias.
