One of the most beautiful churces on the island is located in Xirokampos and it is Panaghia Kavouradena church.
According to the folklore tradition, the church was built on the spot, where an icon of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) was found.
It is sad that a fisherman, while he was collecting shells he was bitten by a crab (kavouri).
At that moment he saw Panaghia's icon on the rock. He prayed and immediately his wound was healed.
Then he took the icon and trasported it to the village's church where he narrated his fellow countrymen what happened to him.
Later that night he saw a black dressed woman in his sleep, who ask him to take the icon to the place that he had found it.
In the morning, miraculously, the icon was found on the rock again.
So a church was decided to be built on that spot which would be dedicated to Panaghia, Virgin Mary
