History
On the 28th of July 1979 the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation inaugurated the Museum of Contemporary Art in Hora, capital of Andros and birthplace of Basil P. Goulandris. The initial reason for the construction of the museum (total floor area of 200m2, architect: Stamos Papadakis, civil engineer: Paris Fragoulis, supervision: Pantelis Karadontis) was to exhibit the collection of works by Andros native sculptor, Michael Tombros, which he bequeathed to his native island. The exhibits were further enriched by part of the personal collection of the two founders, Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation.
The Museum
The Old Wing, as it has come to be called, houses the entire collection of the Andros native sculptor Michalis Tombros as well as representative works by some of the most important Greek sculptors.
During the winter season (October – May) the New Wing of the Museum houses (rotating) exhibitions from the Museum’s permanent collections. During the summer season (July – September) the Museum hosts temporary, individual or thematic exhibitions of major (pioneering) artists in collaboration with museums, foundations, galleries and private collections in Europe and the USA.
The Museum’s library holds more than 5,000 books and also operates as a reading room during the opening hours of the Museum.
The Projection room is located on the ground floor of the Museum in a specially designed room decorated with a mural by Andreas Nomikos. There are screenings of films on the temporary exhibitions of the Museum, history and art.
The museum has hosted, among others, artists such as Paniaras, Picasso, Matisse, Karagatsis, Kandinsky, Bouzianis, Balthus, Galanis, Giacometti, Klee, Chagall, De Chirico, Rodin, Joan Miró, Georges Braque, Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Sophia Vari etc.
The Museum’s café opened in the summer of 2006 on the roof garden of the New Wing and has a nice view of Neimporio beach. It is open during the museum opening hours and serves a variety of beverages as well as homemade sweets and snacks.
