Syriggas is a mountain of Apano Meria which is full of steep slopes, caves, cliffs, small gorges, rich in plant and animal life (golden eagles, peregrine falcons etc.). Today, Syriggas is part of the natural sites of Natura 2000 network and it is protected by specific European legislations.
In the past, before Syros had a water supply network, water carriers brought water from the spring of Syriggas Mountain down to Ermoupoli and back again in order to supply the main city with water.
