Near the village of Chalandriani (9,5 km / 5.9 mi away from Ermoupoli) a prehistoric acropolis was found. It is situated on a steep cliff, there was a strong fortified wall and six towers all around which survive only in ruins. The acropolis was accessible only by one side. On the slope opposite to the acropolis, an important necropolis of 600 prehistoric tombs was discovered. The first excavations had taken place in 1898 by Christos Tsountas.
Chalandriani and the other prehistoric site of Apano Meria, Kastri, are connected through a rough foot trail that will take you about 45' to cross.
