On the outskirts of Korissia one is impressed by the remains of the big installations that once were an Enamel and Metalwork factory. Its proud chimney (45m) is visible from the entrance of the bay of Agios Nikolaos. Being the biggest in the Mediterranean during post war years (1927 – 1957) this factory gave the island a serious perspective of different productive activities. In addition hundreds of people locals and refugees worked there offering the island years of prosperity, social and economic growth. From 1991, the factory is considered preserved and many pieces of its machinery are on display in Korissia from the Association of Friends of the Enamel Factory.
