Morosini Fountain in Lions Square is located opposite the Basilica of San Marco, in the center of Heraklion.
Τhe fountain is one of the most beautiful monuments of Candia (name of Heraklion during the Byzantine period) and preserved in a very good condition. It was constructed by Francesco Morosini in 1628. The fountain was constructed not for aesthetic purposes but to provide unlimited drinking water to Heraklion city.
The eight-lobe cistern, is decorated with embossed mythological depictions and maritime figures like tritons, dolphins and various coats of arms, while the water was flowing from the mouths of four lions.
In 1847 the Turkish changed the form of the fountain by adding marble columns. At the top was set a marble plaque with the gilded inscription “Fountain of Abdul Mecit”, in honour of the Sultan.
In 1900, Morosini fountain was restored to its original form.
