Agia Aikaterini church is located in Agia Aikaterini Square, in the northeast of the Cathedral of Saint Minas.
The temple was built during the Second Byzantine period and became an important cultural and artistic center during the 15th and 17th century. Agia Aikaterini housed the headquarters of the “Stravaganti Academy”, founded in 1590 by Cretan scholars who studied in Italy with a remarkable literary and literary activity.
In the Ottoman period, the church was converted into a mosque, known as the Zulfikar Ali Pasha Tzamisi.
Today, Agia Aikaterini church houses an important exhibition of Byzantine icons and religious objects (ex. manuscripts, vestments, wall paintings etc.). Also, there are displayed unique works by the famous icon-painter Michael Damaskinos, a major exponent of the Cretan School.
