Loggia is called the building that today houses the town hall of Heraklion Municipality.
The building Loggia is located in August 25 street, just north of the Lion Square in the city center of Heraklion. During the Venetian period, Loggia was the official meeting place of sovereigns and nobility where they discussed various topics concerning economic, commercial, and political matters.
The Loggia we see today is the fourth one. The last Loggia was built around 1628 by Francesco Morosini.
In the Turkish period, Loggia suffered extensive damage. The final restoration of the monument began in 1961 and was completed somewhere about 1980. In 1987, Loggia building won the first prize from the international organization EUROPA NOSTRA, as the best renovated and preserved European monument of the year.
Today, Loggia is the main building of the Municipality of Heraklion where offices/services are housed such as the Mayor's office, the deputy mayors offices, administrative and financial services and special hall for ceremonies and weekly meetings of the Municipal Council.
