It was built between 1862-1863, based on the designs of Pietro Sampò, an Italian architect. Its facade consists of three equal parts, the two on the sides protruding in comparison to the one in the center. It has continuing balconies and a marble parapet supported by corbels. Before the main entrance, one can see three arches supported by Tuscan orden columns. The upper part is simpler, with pilasters on each corner, marble frames around the openings, an epistyle on top, a cornice and low parapets. Originally, the entrance was below the balcony, but after the renovation works of 1970, the entrance has been set in its actual location.
The Municipal Library has a remarkable collection of books and precious old copies and it is housed in the basement of the building. On the upper floor, you can visit the actual Cultural Center of Ermoupoli. The same building houses the Cycladic Art Museum, the "Ermoupoli" cultural hall and the local radio station. In the spacious ballroom of the cultural center, one can admire beautiful wall paintings of cupids and carnival masks.
The Cultural Center is open on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 14:30 - 19:00, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays 09:15 - 14:00.
