Between 1828 and 1829, the first three naved basilica of Ermoupoli was built in the Psariani neighbourhood over the port. Around the church, in the courtyard, you can see two arched colonnades. Also, there are chambers on the northeastern part of the courtyard. The interior of the church is beautifully decorated with icons, anthemia, crosses and stars. It has a beautiful marble iconostasis, whereas the vault, the amvon, the kathedra and the ceiling are wooden. The wooden casing of the vaults, which is visible from the church's loft, reminds of an upside down frame of a ship.
In 1983, archaeologist G. Mastoropoulos discovered that the icon depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an early work by El Greco (that is, before his departure to Western Europe). Since then, many visitors come to see for themselves this rare work of art. Many icons were offered by the various craftsmen guilds of the shipyards.
The annual celebration of the church is held on August 15th.
The church is open daily, 8:00 - 12:30 and 17:00 - 19:30
