Some archaeological findings in Maroulas, Kythnos reveal that the island was inhabited throughout the Mesolithic Period (9.000 -8.000 B.C.).
Several findings from the open air settlement which was used as a refueling station or a base of operation have been saved to this date.
During the excavations, archaeological circular residences, tombs and a human skeleton were found.
Next to the skeleton there were stone tools made of flint, quartz and obsidian.
This settlement is the only open – air of the period ever found in Greece.
