The famous Fonissa gorge is set in a wonderful green scenery, scattered with ponds, waterfalls, caves and hollows, attracting many hikers and mountain climbers.
Even in the daytime, sunlight becomes scarce throughout most of this narrow gorge trail. Those who wish to walk through, have to be experienced and properly equipped.
Fonissa has 5 technical descent pathways that can take about 3 hours for a group of 4. The vertical distance in the gorge varies as much as 250 m / 820 ft comparing between the begining and the end of the gorge. The steepest descent trail in the gorge is 18 m / 59 ft high.
To reach the gorge of Fonissa, you will begin from the village of Kato Horio and then walk all the way up to Korfiotissa. Just before entering the nearby village, turn left on a dirt road that leads to the mouth of the gorge.
