The sulfur mine of Victor
Melas used to be in operation there, the oldest business for the mining of sulfur all over Greece.
Historically, between
1890-1905, the mines were in operation, owned by the Company of Public and
Municipal Works. In 1905 their operation stopped due to the production of cheap sulfur in the U.S.A. Between 1910-1918 they operated sporadically, while in
the 1930s there were in full operation and the installations - seen even today-
were built then.
The sulfur mines were in
operation until 1960, and the business was shut down permanently in 1978.
