In the East Aegean Sea, somewhere in the crossroad between East and West, in the island of Chios, mastiha, a product – legend, is being planted since antiquity, connected with traditions, historical events and cultural exchanges, arriving untouched till nowadays, sculpted with the culture of the Eastern Mediterranean, more powerful than ever thanks to its scientifically proven beneficial and therapeutic unique properties.
Chios Mastiha is the name of a resinous sap produced from the mastic tree (Pistacia Lentiscus var. Chia). It is a natural, aromatic resin in teardrop shape that falls on the ground in drops from superficial scratches induced by cultivators on the tree’s trunk and main branches with sharp tools.
The know-how of cultivating Mastiha has been included by UNESCO on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Chios Mastiha
Mastiha is a resinous sap produced from the trunk and branches of the mastic tree. Mastiha appears in teardrop shape among the scratches and falls to the ground in drops. When its flow is constant, the drop is big and rather soft, while a non-constant flow gives a small but harder drop. As a result Mastiha is available in three types: Large, Medium and Small.
ELMA
ELMA chewing gum has always been the most emblematic mastiha product. Being a synonym of authenticity, it withstood time by signalising a respect for tradition and the values of the original Greek Mastiha (or ELliniki MAstiha)
Mastiha Oil
Mastiha Oil is extracted from the Chios mastiha through distillation process with steam. It is 100% natural product containing an extraordinary array of therapeutic, aromatic and flavouring ingredients. Through this distillation process Mastiha Water is produced at the same time, which is also a natural aqueous extract.
Mastic oil is a resinous liquid with a faintly yellow colour and balsamic and rustic odour. It is used as basic ingredient in health & care product: especial for the production of antiseptic creams, anti-bacterial solutions, toothpastes and mouthwashes, soaps, shampoos and bath foams. In addition, the mastic oil is traditionally used in the food industry (confectionary products, bakery products, ice creams & sweets, liqueurs and soft drinks, alcohol drinks, traditional products) especially for flavouring purposes.
Mastiha Flavor is an oleaginous mixture of natural Mastic Oil with a vegetable oil in specific proportion. It is used for better dispersion and easier use.
