Loussios Gorge

Loussios, a small 25km river, has carved out an interesting course, as it runs through an immensely beautiful gorge. That is why it has been named an Archeological location by the Ministry of Culture. There, in Loussios’ gorge, according to mythology, the nymphs washed Zeus’s hair; there Asklipios’ temple was built, and, later, Christians built monasteries and numerous hermitages.

The Loussios gorge is called the ‘Agio Oros’ (Holy Mountain) of the Peloponnese.  Hanging, suspended, on rocks, the holy churches, including those of Agios Andreas, of Sotiras (the Savior), of Panagia Triherousa.

All these buildings symbolize the battle of the human spirit to endeavour through the grandeur of nature, to be united with God.
