Stimfalia Lake

Stimfalia is a mountain lake that keeps its unalterable beauty through the passage of time. Its mythical past is interweaved in a magical scenery, sometimes misty, sometimes deeply blue, that charms every visitor. The imposing mountains of Ziria, Olighyrtos, Mavrovounio and Gravia  that surround the lake, blend beautifully with the rich vegetation, composing a unique scenery.

Lake Stimfalia is approximately 10 m / 32 ft deep and it spreads out on 7.700 daa / 1,9 ac in winter and 3.500 daa / 0,86 ac in summer. This wetlands area doesn't lose its water during winter months, however occasionally it can go completely dry. There are natural sinkholes in the lake that channel the water into tunnels which irrigate the fields. Lake Stimfalia is one of the most particular biotopes of the Peloponnese. Hundreds of bird species (endangered species under protection and many migratory birds) find shelter here. Wild ducks, eagles, halcyons, rock partridges, grey herons, black crowned night herons and cranes are just some of the species that live here. A fish which is endemic to Stimfalia , the Phoxinellus Stymphalicus lives here, and it can survive even through periods of drought. The lake belongs to the NATURA 2000 network of protected areas.
