The Venetian walls of Heraklion surround a part of Heraklion. The construction of the city’s fortification started in 1462 and substantially completed in 1669, with the capture of Candia by the Ottomans.
The fortifications that we see today are designed by Michele Sanmikeli. The walls have a a triangle shape with base in the sea and have a perimeter of about 5km. On the land front has seven bastions: Martinengo, Sampionara, St. Andrew, Jesus, Martinengo, Bethlehem and Bitouri.
The Venetian walls of Heraklion remain largely intact to this day and they are considered to be among the best preserved Venetian fortifications in Europe.
