The Orthodox Church of Agios Mattheos of Sinai is located in the center of Heraklion in 200 m. south of the Cathedral of Agios Minas.
The temple was built during the Second Byzantine period. During the Ottoman period, the church was the main Christian temple as the Turks converted the Monastery of Agia Aikaterini of Sinai to a mosque.
Today, the church hosts icons collection, which includes important works of the famous Cretan School of Iconography.
