The Red House (to Kokkino Spiti) is indeed an old, uninhabited two-storied mansion in Episkopio painted with a deep red paint. It is considered to be haunted or a place of evil deeds. It has been a source of inspiration for a novel (I megali Chimera, 1953) written by M. Karagatsis, an important novelist and for a poem (of his first collection of poems named Sinikismos, 1962) by Manos Eleftheriou.
As the legend has it -and as it is described in the novel- Marina, a young French woman, married to G. Reizis, a Greek sailor, follows him to his birthplace in Episkopi. She experiences the contempt of her mother-in-law and the absence of her husband who is away on his sea trips. Marina begins to have intimate relations with her brother-in-law, but her mother-in-law soon discovers her secret. There follows a series of events that turn out tragically: the brother-in-law commits suicide and Marina follows him shortly after.
It is said that in the past, one could still hear weeps, cries or child laughter around the Red House which was considered to be haunted. Supernatural or even macabre properties were also attributed to a water stream that flowed near the house, before the paving of the new road in the area.Regardless of its strange reputation, the Red House is known to have beautifully painted walls and exceptional ceiling murals.
