Agios Ioannis Alargas Monastery

The Monastery of Agios Giannis Alargas is located 7.5 km west of Nimborios. It is dedicated to the beheading of John the Baptist and it is the most important shrine of the island.

The Monastery has, through tradition, been connected to the sponge fishermen of Halki, who considered this saint their savior. The icons that adorn the Monastery’s interior were donated by the island inhabitants that made a living from sponge-fishing.

The Monastery is dated to the 19th century. It has a shingle roof and is surrounded by ‘archondariki’ (monastery guest-houses) and cells.

Its feast takes place on 29 August and it is accessible by means of a municipal mini-bus after consultation with the driver.
