Knights Castle

At the top of Agios Nikolaos hill, on the northeastern part of the island, the ruins of the medieval Knights’ Castle command the scene. The castle was built mid 14th century by the Knights of Saint John.

At the Castle’s entrance, visitors were able to admire the built-in coat of arms of Pierred Aubusson, Grand master of the Ioannite Knights.

The church of Agios Nikolaos, along with the remnants of 15th and 17th century wall-paintings, is preserved in the castle’s interior.

One reaches the castle via a steep path which starts from the church of the Virgin Mother at the old settlement, Horio.

The climb is rather steep, but its duration does not exceed twenty minutes.
