In Ios the “Giannis Gaitis – Gabriella Simosis” museum is near the “Odysseas Elytis” theatre, in a prominent position with spectacular views and is bathed with unique colors and light at sunset. It really is a place of relaxation and artistic initiation.
The architectural study of the museum was made by Loretta Gaitis and her husband, Jacques Charrat. The museum complex consists of three exhibition halls and a theater with a view of the Aegean.
The ground floor houses the Gaitis works from 1945 to 1968, when the famous little man was “born”. On the upper floor the large structures and the little men reside the space.
Across the street is the Simosis building that expands into two levels, in the ground floor is a room for multiple events, whereas the first floor houses the permanent exhibition of Gabriella Simosis’ sculptures.
At the “Artists friends” building you will see the permanent collection of artist friends of their generation.
From the rooms of Simosis and “Artists friends” building, you can have a unique view of the Aegean. The feeling of the visitor looking at the unique view coincides with that of a passenger ship who overlooks the sea and the islands from the deck.
The museum gives visitors the opportunity to walk into the building, on rooftops discovering a unique view of the town, further down is the port and the endless Aegean as well as the garden of cypresses, olives and oleanders.
