Fonissa Gorge

The stream that passes through the Fonissa gorge flows from Korfiotissa all the way to Kamari and Loutro.Ancient Greeks called this steam Krios (which means ram) as it bursts down the gorge, whereas nowadays it is called, Fonissa, which means the murderess as it is very dangerous to find yourself around when the steam is overflowing. Even if the gorge of Fonissa is relatively small (1,5 km long), it is nevertheless imposing and quite hard to cross. This secluded, surprisingly beautiful gorge owes its formation to the fact that the stream is blocked by a large limestone hill about 1,5 km away from the Corinthian Gulf. Both sides of this very narrow passage (2-3 meters wide and 50 to 300 meters high) are of solid limestone. The passage was for the first time secured in the summer of 1984 by Spyros Apostolopoulos and Aris Theodoropoulos.
