The name of the region, "Fygetou Mylos", comes from the family of Fygetakis which had under its possesion one of the many mills that were scattered around the length of the river and were taking advantage of its abundant water.
It is located in the valley of Pantelis river, next to the bridge through which the main road, that connects Sitia and the surrounding villages, crosses.
The Mill of Fygeto is a medieval mill.
Xanthoudis refers to the fact that at the well of the Mill of Fygeto he saw a sign that wrote "This watermill was built at the expense of and due to the efforts of ...Georgios Karpathios of Doxara in the year 6979, in the month of May (1471 after the birth of Christ)."
Today the whole complex of the mill is in ruins, covered by wild vegetation (brambles and ivies), and thus one cannot see the sign.
The well of the mill (the tower that carries the water to the mill) seems to have suffered great damage.
A little way above the factory of the Mill of Fygeto there is another water-mill and its crest is a small lamb. This lamb is the symbol of the janissary. Before it became a water-mill it was a janissary barracks that was responsible for guarding off movements from one side of the Pandeli river to the other.
