Klimenti

by car: Through the National Road connecting Athens to Corinth, you follow the slip road to Kiato and then the signs that lead to Klimenti (a total distance of 129 km / 80 mi from Athens).

The place name of Klimenti originates from the name of an Arvanitic fara (clan) that had settled at the area in Byzantine times.

• BYZANTINE TIMES

Klimenti is one of the oldest villages in Corinthia, considering it exists since 1400 AD.

1460: The first document mentioning the village comes from a Turkish official record that is kept in Sofia, Bulgaria, in which the village is referred to as Klimentini.

1700: According to the Venetian census, by that  time, 13 families lived in total in this village.

• TURKISH RULE

1821: Klimenti held a prime role in the Greek War of Independence. It hasn't only given prominent independence fighters but it also was a significant military command center.

1823: The Executive Body of the 2nd National Assembly at Astros, under the presidency of Petros (Petrobeys) Mavromihalis and Theodoros Kolokotronis as the Vice-President, had come to Klimenti of Corinthia. Kolokotronis regularly visited the village, as he was in love with Diamantoula Notara from Trikala of Corinthia, sister of Ioannis Notaras, who also was a very important personality of the Greek War of Independence.

1828: The Commander of Corinthia, Praïdis, had stayed in Klimenti and had held some interrogations in an effort to investigate the peremptory acts of Panaghiotakis Notaras, which resulted in the seizure of property of the latter.

• MODERN HISTORY

1950: Brothers Konstantinos and Christos Spiliotis found an ancient inscription of the 4th century BC in the location of  Baltiza, as they ploughed their land. Since August 2006, the inscription of the Proetids, as it has been named, can be seen at the Museum of Ancient Sicyon.

• KONSTANTINOS HOREMIS

The eminent Greek physician and professor of pediatrics at the University of Athens, Konstantinos Khoremis (1898-1966), was born and raised in Klimenti of Corinthia. He contributed significantly to pediatrics in Greece.

He studied in the Universities of Athens and Berlin. He worked in the Athens Nursery between 1927 and 1935. In 1928 he was announced lecturer of pediatrics; in 1935 he became a professor in the Athens University where he taught till 1966. In 1956, he was elected head at the same university. Between 1946 and 1966 he was the director of the Agia Sophia Children's Clinic where he managed to triple the number of beds in the clinic's wards. In 1958, he became member of the Academy of Athens.

He dedicated his professional life to the study of tuberculosis in children, to nutrition related diseases and blood disorders. Some of his studies had been published in reputable scientific journals and editions abroad. Throughout his life, he was honored with many titles and he had taken up important roles: President of the committee for the nutrition of schools and camps, president of the Physicians Association of Athens, honorary member of the Physicians Association of Thessaloniki, member of the Health Board, member of the PIKPA Administration, member of the School Health Board, member of the Pediatrics Associations of France, Switzerland and Germany and honorary member of the Pediatrics Association of Turkey. He had represented Greece to all the pediatrics conferences around the world.  
In 1955, the world-renowned physician created a Children's Summer Camp in Klimenti, which offered quality recreation to many children of all the region of Corinthia.

After his death in 1966, professor N. Matsaniotis suggested that the research laboratory of the 1st Pediatrics Clinic of Athens, were named after Konstantinos Horemis. In fact, two years earlier, Horemis had created and inaugurated this very laboratory.

• VLASSIS TSONGAS

Vlassis Tsongas is born in 1987 in Klimenti. He is a well-known Greek kick boxer. In 2009, he won 2nd place in the Greek National Kick Boxing Championship, the 3rd place in 2010 for the same event, while in 2011 he won 4th place at the World Championship that was held in Italy. During the last years, he is also active in politics.
