Paliouri is one of the quaintest villages of the northeastern Evros. It is located about 3 km east of Metaxades village and is one of the oldest villages in the area.
Its original name was Trilofos (Three Hills) because it was built on three small hills.
According to tradition, the present name derives from a Byzantine queen who visited the area and named after the spiny shrubs called Paliouria, which could be found in abundance at the time.
