The first high school of the newly established Greek state was founded in 1833 and very soon it became a nationwide educational center, with great Neophytos Vamvas as its first headmaster. This school has nurtured many personalities which have played an important role in Greece's modern history, among which, Eleftherios Venizelos, Petros Protopapadakis, Andreas Syngros, Konstantinos Volonakis, Manos Eleftheriou and others.
Since 1999, this building has been donated to the University of the Aegean.
