The second allied cemetery of Lemnos is located in the village Portiano. Smaller but equivalent in historical significance to that in Moudros, it lies next to the church of the Virgin Mary (Eisodia tis Theotokou).
Here are 352 graves of fallen soldiers in the campaign for the conquest of the Straits of the Dardanelles (Gallipoli expedition), the British, French, Australians, New Zealanders, Egyptian and Indian soldiers from 17-56 years.
Full details of the identity of the dead came from Italy and the construction of the cemetery, began in August 1915, during the fighting at Gallipoli, and the cemetery was in use until 1920.
The stone precinct and the inclined plates were added three years later.
