The Monastery of Panagia tou Nikous is situated at a small distance from Chora, the capital of the island. The monastery was named after the Byzantine “Panagia Nikopios” and was built -like other churches of the island – on the ruins of ancient temples. Nowadays, only the nave and aisles of the monastery are maintained; just before 1821, this building housed the Great School under the guidance pf the teacher of the Greek nation Makarios. According to legend, the famous icon of Panagia Nikopios had been brought to Kythnos during the Fall of Constantinople. Later, the icon was “taken” by the Venetian conquerors to be placed in San Marco, Venice where it is kept to this day.
