Panaghia Kanala is located in a seaside settlement of the same name on the southeast part of the island; it is one of the most important sacred shrines in the Cyclades since the icon is considered to be thaumaturgical.
According to tradition, its icon was found by fishermen in the channel – “Kanali” between Kythnos and Serifos. This is why it was called Panaghia Kanala.
It is a marvellous piece of art of the Gretan school, painted by the priest Emmanouil Skordilis in 1575. This icon is housed in a temple today which was built in 1869.
Every year, on 15th August, a feast is organized during which a procession of the icon and also a representation of the discovery of the icon takes place.
A settlement has been developed around the church, extending to a pine-tree lined beach.
