A monastery of the Capuchin Order was built here in aid of the poor, in 1633, the church of Agios Ioannis, which is located at the same place and is of great historical significance, was built in 1535. In 1852 the monastery took its final form. The village's dignitaries used the monastery's courtyard for their assemblies. Its crypts served as a refuge from pirate attacks. Since 1896 the crypts serve to keep the relics and tombstones of old families of Ano Syros. The monastery hosts a library featuring 6.000 old books and manuscripts.
Before you decide to visit the monastery, we would recommend you contacted in time the abbot who is the last to still live in the monastery.
