While the Pervolakia gorge is not as well-known as other gorges, it holds quite a few treasures, discovered years ago by German, Dutch and Scandinavian botanists.
The gorge starts from the Pezoula settlement, extends 3.5kilometers, reaching the Libyan sea, next to the Kapsa monastery.
Recently, on various sign-posts, the gorge has been named 'gorge of Kapsa monastery' or 'Pervolakia gorge' (in lowercase letters), but the name 'Pervolakia gorge' has, officially, become obsolete, leaving the name 'gorge of Kapsa monastery and the surrounding area' as the more officially acknowledged name.
Either way, what needs to be pointed out is that for the local inhabitants the name 'gorge of Kapsa monastery' never existed, and 'gorge of Pervolakia' was the accepted name.
The gorge has become part of the Natura 2000 network (public directive 92/43/EEC) and is very interesting in terms of natural beauty.
The gorge contains cliffs, ravines, rocks, caves, and in the wider area you will come across garrigues (thyme, sage etc), screes, limestones, caves, and vegetated sea-cliffs.
In the Pervolakia gorge and in the wider area you may come across the falcon of Eleonora (falco de eleonora).
