The word "Piperia" is a reference to the huge pepper tree that dominates the taverna and indeed the village.
A cafenion has been on this spot for hundreds of years and here people would settle family feuds, arrange marriages and commemorate both births and deaths.
The pepper tree itself is approximately a hundred years old and was brought to Pefki by a local man called Nikos Thamoulakis who went to Alexandria aged 12 to seek his fortune and returned many years later with the sapling tree, to become the apothecary in Pefki.
