The monastery of Diskouri is located 43km east of Rethymnon, on the slopes of Psiloritis near the villages Anogia and Axos.
The monastery considered one of the oldest in Crete. Its antiquity is evidenced by the the nearby Byzantine church of St. John the Baptist.
The building of the monastery in its current form acquired in the last period of the Venetian rule. The monastery is a distinctive type of a fortress architecture. The small church is dedicated to Saint George. The Cretan herders used to swear on Saint Geroge's icon when they are accused of stealing animals.
The monastery of Diskouri suffered much destruction during the revolution of 1821, while the strong earthquake of 1856 in Crete caused a lot of damage as well.
