The Veli Pasha Mosque is located in Rethymno city, in Mastabas area.
The mosque was built in the 17th century after the establishment of the Turks in Rethymno. It is believed that it has been built on top of the Venetian church of Saint Onuphrius.
The mosque is considered one of the most important monuments of Crete because it operates as the Paleontological Museum, being part of the Natural History Museum of Goulandris Foundation.
The Veli Pasa Mosque has some structurally unique features such as the nine domes, thirteen consecutive cells on the west side, the Priory and the Minaret, which is the oldest in Rethymno.
The mosque has been severely damaged, especially during the bombing of 1941 which collapsed across the south side of the domes. The restoration was done gradually, after the granting of the Mosque from the Ministry of Culture in the Natural History Museum.
