Starting your trek from the monastery of Prophet Elias above Pyrgos you will enjoy one of the most impressive hiking trails in the Aegean. It goes downhill all the way and it will not take you more than 45 minutes. From here, you can also see Perissa, Kamari, a big part of Santorini, and many other Cycladic islands unfolding in front of you! The path is easy to follow and the red spray marks on some of the rocks will help you find your way to ancient Thera.
From the village of Pyrgos, drive uphill towards the monastery of Prophet Elias. A few meters before the gate of the military facilities, you will clearly see a descending trail to your left. Start walking, and when you reach the first fork in the road, go left towards Kamari.
After passing by some pines bent by the wind, the top of Prophet Elias will disappear from sight and you will see ancient Thera towering atop the rock. The path at this point appears to be centuries old –indeed, it is!
Everything is simple from there on, and in about 25 minutes you will have reached the archaeological site canteen and parking lot.
