The cave of Pelekita is situated at a distance of 5km northeast from Kato Zakros.
In order to visit the cave from Kato Zakros, you have to either walk for about 1 hour or travel by boat for 15 minutes.
Pelekita is one of the biggest caves in Crete with length of up to 310m and occupies an area approximately 500 square meters.
The interior is unique, as spectacular stone blocks alternate with the stalactites and the stalagmites that decorate it.
Name:
Tha name Pelekita means carve in english. It comes from the quarry nearby the cave, from which stones were carved.
The other name that the cave is known with is Cave of the Fig Tree. This name comes from the fig tree that is found near the entrance of the cave.
