"At Velies, where we used to spend most of our summer times, gardens were full of fruit. We took the baskets in hand to gather fruits, grapes, walnuts and almonds. Near our house there was a big fountain with running water. There, we were going to see women washing and whitening their clothing while men watering their animals. The water was continuing to run under the trees, poplars and stubbles, and watering with its furrows the estates of Ritsos family. Here, we were chasing frogs, splashing into the water and laying down under the shadow of trees, on mats, which we had brought from the house. At the time of vine harvest we were running inside vineyards between the workers and spending hours at the wine presses. The sunny terraces (liakota) filling up with black currant to dry in the sun while we were listening to the must boiling. The sweet wine of Monevasia and its surroundings is very famous. When was the time of hunting, our uncles and father were leaving with their servants and dogs and women had some visiting relatives and best men."
